Tom's path to writing “Limited War,” associated articles, and university papers, began during his undergraduate research of both the French-Indochina and subsequent Vietnam Wars. After two years, he volunteered for military service, and his knowledge continued to mature during his one-year assignment at the Headquarters, Military Assistance Command-Vietnam (HQ MAC-V) in Saigon. Because of his opportunities to attend various senior-level meetings at the headquarters, he began to develop a high-level understanding of military war strategy, and the sociology of military soldiers and their families in the face of long-term, far-away wars.
